Student Focus: Evin Wong
Hello, my name is Evin. I am enrolled in the Graphic Communications Management program at Toronto Metropolitan University. I want to take this opportunity to thank the donors who have supported and continue to support students venturing into the printing industry. Their support has made it possible for students like myself to learn about print and explore the possibilities of a medium that has continued to grow and evolve alongside humans for centuries.
As a designer and illustrator, print is an important medium for expressing my ideas and thoughts. However, before GCM, I did not think of print as more than what we read on and a medium to produce artistic works. GCM changed that perception for me (and I assume many others who study at GCM). The program and discipline have sparked my interest in the potential of print and how it can help promote accessibility through how we interact daily with printed materials as consumers and users.
Recently, I’ve been presented with an opportunity to make an impact at TMU through print. I am part of the continuing effort to rebrand the formerly Ryerson University’s signage to convey their efforts and conviction for positive change. Printed signs are a powerful carrier of purpose and messages and help us communicate in ways that span beyond societies. Print permeates and assists us in all aspects of our lives. This is especially true with the increasing attention paid to accessibility for everyone. It just goes to show what a fantastic medium print is and what printing can accomplish.
The printing industry goes beyond the boundaries of one industry. It is a cross-disciplinary titan with as many mysteries and innovations awaiting it as the boundlessness of the seas. Only if you embark on a ship sailing its seas can you truly understand and experience print’s unfathomability. I hope more people will join us in our journey through the century.
